Wife of Chad “Ochocinco” files for divorce

After a brief 41-day marriage, Evelyn Lozada of VH1 reality show “Basketball Wives” has filed for divorce from NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson (formerly Ochocinco). Johnson was arrested this weekend for allegedly head-butting Lozada in an altercation in Florida. In addition to the assault charges and divorce filing, Johnson is facing the loss of a spin-off reality show on their relationship and a termination of his contract to play for the Miami Dolphins.

According to the responding police, the argument began as an allegation of Johnson’s infidelity, and resulted in the alleged assault. At this time, Lozada has pursued misdemeanor charges against Johnson, and also has a no-contact order against him.

Divorce is never a simple decision, nor is it reached easily. The consequences of divorce for this couple will likely be large. Though the marriage was short, due to the high-profile nature of both persons, the division of assets is likely to be a difficult and lengthy process — that is, unless one of them is willing to settle or there was a stringent pre-nuptial agreement.

If you are considering divorce for any reason, speaking with an attorney can be a great help. They know how to get the process started. Lozada and Johnson do not have any children together, so custody won’t be part of their proceedings, however, knowing these larger-than-life personalities, that does not mean the process will be smooth or brief.
