Choosing the right family law attorney

If you have decided to file for divorce, you have probably found yourself facing the overwhelming task of finding a Cobb County family law attorney to guide you through the divorce process. Although your decision in this regard will depend largely on personal preferences such as gender, age and experience level, and other logistical factors such as cost and office location, there are a few things that you should remember when you are meeting with attorneys.

First, it is important that your divorce attorney has a good grasp of all areas of family law, including divorce, child custody, child support, property division and, if your situation warrants it, domestic violence or child abuse. In addition, your attorney should have a good knowledge of the workings of the family law system in your state or county. He or she should know the judges, clerks and other court officials, and be aware of the laws of discovery and other family court procedures.

Second, your family law attorney should have a good grasp of the other areas of law that could come in to play in your case. These include tax laws in relation to property division and spousal support, real estate laws and procedures in relation to both residential and commercial property, and laws relating to corporations, partnerships, professional practices and the like, especially if you and your spouse own a family or other small business.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the divorce lawyer you choose should have some knowledge of psychology and human relationships. He or she should be able to guide you through this difficult, often-painful process with empathy and care, while still working hard to get you the best result for your family and your future.
