Olympian Lindsey Vonn and husband to divorce

When skier Lindsey Vonn checked her time after completing the downhill ski event of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, she knew that she had won the gold medal. In interviews following her emotional win, she credited her husband and coach, Thomas, for helping her achieve that major personal goal. Less than two years later, however, the couple has reportedly filed for divorce as the ski season is just getting underway, leaving many wondering what toll the split will take on her both personally and professionally.

The Vonns met as members of the U.S. Ski Team, for which Thomas had skied professionally. He began assisting with Lindsey’s coaching and their relationship soon intensified. The couple was married in September 2007.

As Lindsey’s skiing career flourished, Thomas became an essential part of her professional life. He set up her interviews and coordinated other logistical details of her skiing career, leaving her the time and energy she needed to focus on her skiing skills and techniques. As a result, she has become one of the most successful female skiers in recent history, accumulating 42 World Cup wins and three overall World Cup titles. A recent slalom win made her just the fifth female skier to complete the World Cup discipline sweep.

Lindsey will reportedly continue with her ski season, and is expected to ski in a World Cup competition this week in Lake Louise, Alberta. It is not known whether Thomas will continue to play a role in her professional life. In a recent statement, she said that she will “continue to be coached by the U.S. Ski Team” for the remainder of the ski season.
