When a couple is thinking about divorce, there are many factors that can motivate them to attempt to work out their problems and remain in their marriage, such as a mortgage, debt, or, most commonly, children. This may be what happened with NBA star Allen Iverson when his wife, Tawanna filed for divorce in Georgia, later dropped the divorce petition, and then decided to file again this week.
In original divorce petition, filed in Fulton County Superior Court on March 2, 2010, Tawanna stated that the couple’s eight year marriage was “irretrievably broken.” She asked the court for temporary and permanent physical custody of the couple’s five children, who range in ages from 17 months to 15 years. She also included a request for child support and alimony, but did not specify an exact dollar amount.
A month prior to the divorce filing, Allen Iverson announced that he was leaving the Philadelphia 76ers in order to focus on his four-year-old daughter, Messiah, who was suffering from an undisclosed illness. Allen said that he wanted to have more time to spend with his daughter as she recovered.
Later, Tawanna decided to drop her original divorce petition. She did not state her reasons for doing so, but it is likely that the family banded together to battle Messiah’s illness. However, the reconciliation did not last long: last week, she re-filed for divorce in Georgia.
Neither spouse has specified the reasons for the duplicate divorce filings. Currently, Allen is playing professional basketball in Turkey, and he is reportedly making plans to return to the NBA to finish out his basketball career.
