Avoid sabotaging your Atlanta child custody case

When two parents love and want to spend as much time with their children as possible, which is usually the case, a child custody battle can quickly become heated and very emotional. This is why even the most minor issues or infractions can be (and often are) brought as evidence against one parent or the other, and those details may even be the deciding factor in the case.

Therefore, it is important that parents make every effort to steer clear of any behavior that a Georgia family court judge. Below is a list of a few common mistakes that can easily sabotage a child custody case.

  • Criticizing your spouse to family and friends: These people are usually shared connections between you and your spouse. As such, it is highly likely that your negative comments will get back to your spouse. It is especially important that you do not criticize your spouse in front of your children, as most judges tend to frown upon that.
  • Taking your children on vacation without notifying your spouse: During a heated custody battle, it is easy to see how this could be construed as attempting to kidnap the kids, even if you're just going on a short vacation. Keep your spouse notified of all out-of-town trips.
  • Denying telephone contact between your children and your spouse: The judge must know that your children are free to communicate with either parent at any time.
  • Moving in with a significant other: A divorce is a confusing time for children as it is, and most judges do not appreciate a parent throwing a new boyfriend or girlfriend into the mix. It is best to stay apart until the divorce is final.

In sum: stay civil and responsible, and avoid losing custody of your children over a technicality.
