Terrell Owens catches up on child support payments

In recent months, we have blogged about professional football player Terrell Owens and his repeated run-ins with the Fulton County family court system regarding his alleged failure to pay his court-ordered child support. Now, it appears that the threat of jail time for contempt has again motivated Owens to make good on his child support payments.

Georgia ranks in the top 10 for domestic violence homicides

According to a recent study, Georgia is among the top 10 states in the U.S. in terms of domestic violence homicides. Specifically, Georgia ranks sixth for women killed by men, and the majority of the homicides were the result of domestic violence committed by men against their wives or other intimate partners.

In Georgia, failure to pay child support leads to jail time (two)

Earlier this week, we began a discussion of the court cases against parents for their failure to pay child support. Because these are civil matters, there is no constitutional requirement that defendants be provided an attorney for their hearings, as there is for criminal cases. However, the hearings often result in a jail sentence or other negative consequences for indigent defendants who are unable to make their child support payments, which advocates claim is unfair and possibly even unconstitutional.

In Georgia, failure to pay child support leads to jail time (one)

Under the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution, no person may be "deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law." Traditionally, this has been interpreted to require that anyone who is accused of a crime be given a fair trial. Because one factor of a fair trial is the provision of an attorney, the public defender program provides defendants with a defense attorney if they cannot afford to retain one. As many defendants have little experience with the law and the legal system, this attorney can make the difference between freedom and jail time.

Americans start Tokyo protests over Japanese child abductions

It is a very complex process for a mother to petition for full custody of a child if the child's father already shares custody of the child. When a judge decides on who should have custody, he or she looks at the best interests of the child and it might be difficult to convince a later judge that the first judge made a mistake. It is even harder for a mother to deny the father visitation with the child. While this is true in the United States, it is a whole different matter in Japan and the Japanese legal system has long sheltered Japanese mothers who have taken their half-American children from returning them to the United States.

Georgia divorce rate is above average, part two

Earlier this week, we began a discussion of a recently released study from the United States Census Bureau, which reported that the divorce rate in Georgia and throughout the southern region of the country is higher than the national average. Specifically, the study reported that the divorce rate in the south was 10.2 percent for men and 11.1 percent for women in 2009, above the national average of 9.2 percent for men and 9.7 percent of women.

Georgia divorce rate is above average, part one

According to U.S. Census data from 2009, Georgia is one of 14 states with divorce rates above the national average. The majority of states with an above-average divorce rate are in the south, which researchers partially attribute to a higher rate of marriage in the region.

Atlanta Falcons owner and wife announce separation

According to a statement from Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, he and his wife, Stephanie, have separated. Although the couple has not yet announced whether they plan to seek a divorce, Falcons fans are already wondering whether the split will be similar to one the most newsmaking high-asset divorces in professional sports: that of Frank and Jamie McCourt, the owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
